Built To Last

Decorative concrete with serious grip

Exposed aggregate is the most popular decorative finish we pour — and for good reason. Washing back the surface reveals the natural stone in the mix, giving a textured, high-end look that hides marks and resists slipping.

It's ideal for steep Adelaide Hills driveways, around pools and on entertaining areas where a smooth finish would be slick. Choose from a range of stone blends and colours to suit the home.

How we do it — our concreting process

Exposed aggregate is the most popular decorative finish we pour, and it is also one of the most skill-dependent. The look comes from washing back the surface at exactly the right moment to reveal the natural stone in the mix — too early and the stone washes out, too late and it stays buried. Decades of doing it is what gets the finish consistent and clean.

  1. Design and sample. We help you choose a stone blend and colour to suit the home, and quote the job after a site measure.
  2. Base and formwork. Exactly as for any quality slab — compacted base, accurate forms, correct falls.
  3. Reinforcement and pour. Steel placed to spec, then the decorative mix placed and screeded.
  4. Exposing the aggregate. We wash and expose the surface at the right time to reveal the stone evenly across the whole area.
  5. Cure and seal. We cure the slab, then apply a quality sealer that protects against stains and makes the stone colour pop.

Workmanship and standards

Consistency is everything with exposed aggregate — the stone should be revealed evenly, with no bald patches or over-washed edges, and the colour should run true across the job. That takes timing, technique and an experienced crew working as a team on the day, because the exposing has to happen within a window that does not wait. Underneath the decorative surface it is still a structural slab, so the base, thickness, reinforcement and jointing all get the same care as a plain driveway.

Why it suits our region

Exposed aggregate is grippy and slip-resistant, which is exactly why it suits steep Adelaide Hills driveways and pool surrounds where a smooth finish would be dangerous when wet. It also hides marks, leaf stain and general wear far better than plain concrete, so it keeps looking good with very little effort — a real advantage on the leafy, sloping blocks common across the Hills and the Clare Valley. Around pools it stays cooler underfoot than dark pavers and gives sure footing for kids and adults alike.

Materials, finishes and options

We offer a wide range of stone blends and colours, from soft natural tones to bolder, darker mixes, and we can combine exposed aggregate with coloured borders or plain banding for a custom look. It works beautifully on driveways, paths, patios, entertaining areas and pool surrounds. We seal every job and recommend re-sealing every few years to keep it looking fresh — our exposed aggregate cost guide explains the pricing and what drives it.
