Built To Last

Driveways engineered for our conditions

A driveway is the first thing people see and the hardest-worked slab on the property. We design and pour concrete driveways that handle steep Hills blocks, heavy vehicles and South Australia's reactive clay without cracking or pooling water.

Every driveway is set out with the right fall for drainage, reinforced to engineer's spec, and finished in your choice of plain, coloured, brushed or exposed aggregate. We also handle the council crossover where required.

  • Site prep, excavation and compacted base
  • Steel reinforcement to engineering spec
  • Correct fall and drainage for steep blocks
  • Plain, brushed, coloured or exposed aggregate finishes
  • Council crossovers and aprons
  • Expansion joints and crack control

How we do it — our concreting process

A driveway is the hardest-worked slab on most properties, so the result depends far more on what happens before and during the pour than on the concrete itself. Our process is methodical from the first phone call to the final cut joint.

  1. Free on-site measure and quote. We come to you, look at access, slope, soil and existing levels, talk through finishes, and give you a clear written price with no surprises.
  2. Excavation and base preparation. We strip the site, set the levels and falls, then build and compact a stable crushed-rock base — the foundation that stops a driveway from settling and cracking later.
  3. Formwork and set-out. We form the edges precisely to the finished levels, setting the falls so water always runs away from the house and garage.
  4. Steel reinforcement. We place mesh or bar to the engineering and the use, chaired up off the base so the steel sits in the right part of the slab where it actually does its job.
  5. The pour and finish. We place, screed and finish the concrete in your chosen finish — broom, coloured, or exposed aggregate.
  6. Jointing and curing. We cut control joints at the correct spacing to manage cracking, then cure the slab properly so it gains full strength.

Workmanship and standards

Concrete naturally moves and shrinks as it cures, and South Australian soils — especially the reactive clays of the Adelaide Hills — move with the seasons. Good workmanship is about controlling that movement rather than pretending it does not exist. That means a properly compacted base, the correct slab thickness for the load, reinforcement placed at the right depth, and control joints cut where we want any cracking to occur. We build driveways to handle real life — not just the family car, but caravans, trailers and the occasional delivery truck.

On steep blocks we pay particular attention to grade transitions so vehicles do not bottom out, to surface grip so the driveway is safe when wet, and to drainage so run-off is captured rather than left to undermine the edges. Our thickness, slope and drainage guide goes deeper on the engineering.

Finishes, materials and options

We pour the full range of driveway finishes: a clean, cost-effective broom finish; oxide-coloured and stencilled concrete to match your home; and premium exposed aggregate that reveals the natural stone in the mix for a textured, non-slip, high-end look. We use quality, correctly specified concrete mixes, seal decorative finishes to protect them and bring out their colour, and handle the council crossover where one is required — see our council approval guide.

Caring for your driveway

A well-built concrete driveway needs very little maintenance, which is a big part of its appeal. Keeping it clean, dealing with oil spills reasonably promptly and re-sealing decorative finishes every few years is about all it asks. Avoid letting water pond against the edges and keep heavy vehicles to the parts of the slab designed for them, and a good driveway will look the part and stay structurally sound for decades.

Questions, Answered

Frequently asked questions

Most plain concrete driveways fall between $80–$120 per square metre, with exposed aggregate and coloured finishes higher. Site access, slope and excavation all affect the price — see our driveway cost guide for a full breakdown.
A residential driveway is typically 100mm thick with steel mesh; driveways carrying trucks or machinery go thicker. We set thickness and reinforcement to the engineering for your soil and use — read our slab thickness guide.
A new or modified crossover (the section between the road and your boundary) usually needs council approval. We handle the crossover works — see our council approval guide.
Yes — steep Adelaide Hills driveways are our bread and butter. We get the fall, grip finish and drainage right so the surface is safe and water runs where it should.
